Enterprise search across your systems

Search that reaches into the systems holding the answer, not only the document store — because the knowledge people cannot find is rarely sitting in the place they are told to look.

What enterprise search has to reach

  • Search across multiple sources

Document libraries, project systems, ticketing, wikis and line-of-business applications queried together, with results ranked across them rather than presented per source.

  • Connectors to legacy systems

Indexing systems that were never designed to be searched, including ones without a usable API — which is frequently where the most valuable material sits.

  • Relevance and ranking tuning

Ranking tuned against what people actually search for, measured, and adjusted again — relevance is not configured once and left.

  • Permission-aware results

Results filtered by each user's real permissions in each source system, evaluated at query time rather than assumed at index time.

  • Synonyms and domain vocabulary

Organisational and technical vocabulary mapped so a search for the informal term finds the document filed under the formal one.

  • Search analytics and gap reporting

What people search for and fail to find, reported back — which is the cheapest content strategy input an organisation can get.

Reaching into the old systems beats waiting for a migration

The usual answer to scattered knowledge is consolidation, and the usual outcome is a multi-year programme that never quite finishes. Meanwhile people still cannot find anything.

Searching across systems where they stand delivers the outcome far sooner and, in many cases, removes the urgency behind the migration entirely. Where consolidation still makes sense, the search analytics tell you which content is actually worth moving.

Federated
Sources indexed where they are, not moved first.
Legacy reachable
Connectors for systems without a modern API.
Permission-aware
Access evaluated at query time, per source.
Tuned iteratively
Relevance measured and adjusted, not set once.
Vocabulary-aware
Informal terms find formally filed documents.
Gap reporting
Failed searches show what is missing.

Enterprise search for SINTEF, sharing knowledge across legacy systems

SINTEF's knowledge was spread across systems that were not going to be replaced any time soon, so the search had to reach into them rather than wait for a consolidation that might never happen. Building the connectors and getting permission-aware results right was the project; the search interface itself was the straightforward part.

Common questions

Do we have to migrate content first?

No, and in most cases you should not. Federated search across the systems you already run delivers the result sooner, and the search analytics then tell you which content is worth migrating — which is better than deciding that up front.

Will people see documents they should not?

No. Permissions are evaluated against each source system at query time, so a change of access in the source takes effect immediately rather than at the next index run.

Can you index a system with no API?

Often, through database-level access, export mechanisms or file system indexing. We assess it per system and say plainly where the cost of a connector outweighs the value of what it would index.
